Is your home protected from wildfires?

Novato homeowners, you can take action today to reduce fire hazards around your home and yard.
Siding

Replace wood or vinyl siding with stucco, metal siding or fiber cement siding.

Windows

Remove single paned windows. Replace with WUI compliant tempered glass windows.

Vent

Vent Screens should be replaced with manufactured fire rated vents or wire mesh 1/8” or less in diameter.

Deck

Keep top of decks, deck grooves, balconies, and stairs clean and free of ignitable materials.

Outdoor Furniture

Combustible items such as patio furniture, cushions, mats should be stored indoors during Red Flag Warnings.

Landscaping

Remove combustible material in the first 5’. Place small rock or non-combustible material along foundation/siding close to structure.

Dry Grass

Cut annual grasses to 4” in length area 5’ to 30’ from structure.

Trees

Limb up tree branches 6-8’ from the ground and separate from structures, rooflines, and chimneys.

Roof

Compliant roof examples are metal, composite, asphalt, tile. Should be clean and free of dead leaves or other debris.

Gutters

Made of metal and covered or clean gutters multiple times per year.

Novato Fire Matching Grants
The Novato Fire Protection District and the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority have partnered together to provide wildfire mitigation programs for the Novato community. One of our team of Wildfire Mitigation Specialists will come to your home and give a free assessment that is specific to your structure and surrounding vegetation.

Through this evaluation, we will identify home and landscape vulnerabilities and provide strategies to improve safety. Included in your personalized assessment will be a written report for reference. After an assessment has been completed, you can then apply for one of our Matching Grant Programs including Vegetation Management, Home Hardening, and more.

Take recommended actions!

Following your customized recommendations, you can make improvements to better protect your home and remove hazards that can fuel fires. After your official home assessment, you will become eligible for matching Novato Fire Protection District grants for vegetation management, home hardening or other programs.
